Long-time Chamber member Parents Forum has launched a program in Ohio, the home state of founder Eve Sullivan. Parents Forum Youngstown is creating a community-wide, low-cost and sustainable collaborative to bring parenting education and support to Youngstown and Mahoning County parents. That region has been hard hit both by the opioid abuse epidemic and by widespread unemployment due to the loss of manufacturing jobs, including those in Lordstown where the General Motors facility closed in November 2018.
Youngstown Mayor Tito Brown and Youngstown State University faculty members, Prof. Patrick O’Leary, Jeanine Mincher and Tammy King were involved in supporting the program’s launch on August 1st, Respect for Parents Day. Sullivan traveled to Youngstown earlier this month to train family advocates in the thirteen Alta Head Start centers. A small seed grant from YSU’s Centofanti Center is funding the initiative.
A call for universal parenting education by Mayor Brown and Sullivan appeared as an op-ed in the July 30 edition of the Youngstown Vindicator. https://bit.ly/2YyPx0Z
“Feedback from Alta Head Start family advocates was uniformly favorable,” Sullivan said, “One workshop participant commented, ‘It showed me how uncomfortable I am expressing true feelings,’ and this speaks directly to the focus of Parents Forum curriculum: developing emotional awareness.”
