Registration Permanent residents of Cambridge who keep a vehicle within the city limits for more than 30 days within one calendar year are required to register their car with the city and to alert their insurance company that they have garaged their vehicle in Cambridge. This can have an effect on the prevailing insurance rate for your vehicle. We advise you to check with your insurance agent as to the effect on your rates.
Permanent residents of Cambridge with vehicles garaged (and insured) in Cambridge are entitled to a parking sticker that allows on-street parking in designated spaces throughout the city. Each household is also entitled to a temporary parking permit for visitors that allows parking within defined areas that divide the city. Visitor areas are designed to allow guests to park within no more than a block or two from their host.
There is no waiting period to receive a parking permit for permanent residents of the city whose vehicles are registered and insured in Massachusetts. Parking permits are available from the City of Cambridge Community Development Department located at 344 Broadway. To obtain a permit, you must present a current utility bill with your name and address on the bill, dated for service within thirty days as proof of residency.
Parking All drivers are advised strongly to note that parking officers are active throughout the day and throughout the city. Illegal parking fines are a significant source of revenue for the city and public parking spaces are at a premium, so enforcement is highly efficient. Further, visitors should be advised that from April 1 through December 31 there is a city-wide street-cleaning program, with scheduled days posted conspicuously in all street parking areas affected. No parking is permitted in these areas on those days posted from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and this is strictly enforced. Violators will receive a fine, and their ticketed vehicle will be towed.
All vehicles registered in Cambridge must park legally, as posted, at the curb, at meters, or at several municipal lots and garages. Alternatively, there are lots and garages that are privately owned and managed or leased by the city to private vendors.
For more information on vehicle registration and parking, visit the City of Cambridge Web site or call (617) 349-4700.
