Cambridge offers a unique shopping experience for residents and visitors. From small boutiques and specialty stores to family-owned establishments and large retail chains, tourists and locals alike flock to distinctive shopping venues across the city.
Neighborhood shopping areas Harvard Square is known for its rich mix of old and new, with brand name chain stores juxtaposed with family-owned and -operated businesses. In addition to its unique blend of shops, Harvard Square's eclectic sidewalk performances and spirited denizens are an ambient backdrop for outdoor shopping.
Central Square, or downtown Cambridge, is packed with small neighborhood institutions including independent music stores, booksellers, and coffee shops. More Bohemian by reputation than Harvard Square, Central Square is home to over forty restaurants, which help to attract its crowds of shoppers, bystanders, cafe idlers, food lovers, and travelers from near and far.
Specialty shops whose friendly and knowledgeable storekeepers peddle rare books, antiques, clothing, fine stationary, collectibles and novelty items define Porter Square. Because the area is largely residential, the majority of Porter Square's specialty shops are located along Massachusetts Avenue.
Inman Square is home to an array of local neighborhood establishments including florists, dry cleaners, toys stores, banks and hardware stores. This diverse neighborhood also features a number of local ethnic markets.
Other eclectic and not-to-be-missed shopping areas include the Observatory Hill/Huron Avenue area, Porter Square, and Kendall Square. Each offering a mix of quaint, local and established shops and stores.
Shopping malls CambridgeSide Galleria, a large shopping mall facility, is located at the east end of the city and features anchor stores Macy's, Sears and Best Buy, as well as three floors of brand-name retail shops.
