2004-2005 Cambridge City Councilors sworn in and Mayor elected The newly elected Cambridge City Council was sworn in on Monday, January 5. Following the swearing in, the Council elected Michael Sullivan to a second consecutive term as Mayor. Mayor Sullivan was elected by his own vote and the votes of four of his colleagues: Councilors Decker, Galluccio, Reeves and Toomey. Councilor Davis initially received four votes: her own and Councilors Maher, Murphy, and Simmons. Councilors Murphy and Simmons changed their votes to Councilor Reeves before the vote was final.
Mayor Sullivan is serving his sixth term on the City Council and is only the fourth person elected to serve consecutive terms as mayor under the Plan E form of government established in 1942. The other consecutive term mayors were John H. Corcoran, 1942to 1945, Edward Crane, 1960 to 1965, and current Councilor Kenneth Reeves, 1992 to 1995. Mayor Sullivan is the third member of his family to serve as mayor. Mayor Sullivan’s uncle, current Middlesex County Clerk of Courts Edward Sullivan, served from 1956 to 1957, and his father, Walter, served three terms, 1968 to 1969, 1974 to 1975, and 1986 to 1987.
Marjorie Decker was unanimously elected vice mayor. Vice Mayor Decker is in her third term on the City Council and this is her first term as vice mayor.
