2008 US Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Conference Recap

Terrence Smith, the Chamber’s Director of Government Affairs, attended the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s annual Government Affairs Conference from June 4 to June 6 in Las Vegas. The conference brought Chamber officials from around the country together to discuss public policy issues, challenges and opportunities. The conference included presentations on immigration policy, education, workforce development, trade, transportation, energy, labor, and transportation.

U.S. Chamber staff, industry representatives and others presented information focused on priorities at the federal level of the U.S. Chamber. Significant time was given to two issues, transportation and education and workforce, where the U.S. Chamber has identified the need for increased government action, including increased funding. It should be noted that the US Chamber has for many years supported a small government agenda.

Of particular interest was the transportation presentations which included members of the National Surface Transportation Policy and Revenue Commission. This panel identified reforms in how transportation investments are made and increases in tax revenues to meet the nation’s transportations needs.

Background information on the U.S. Chamber’s issues agenda is available from the U.S. Chamber Web site. If you would like to review the conference agenda or information from presentations please contact Terry at tsmith@cambridgechamber.org or by phone at (617) 876-4213.
