April 18, 2007 GAC Update 

No Council meeting this week due to the Patriots’ Day holiday.

Next week’s GAC is cancelled. The May meeting is scheduled for May 22 when our guest will be State Representative and Vice Mayor Tim Toomey. The GAC is planning two events in June.

The Council meets next Monday and should receive the FY 2008 budget as part of the agenda packet for that meeting.  The first budget hearing is scheduled for Saturday April 28 at 10 in City Hall.

Northeastern University is holding a conference titled Nanotechnology and Public Policy: Basic Science, Applications, and Regulatory Implications on May 1.

The City is accepting nominations for the 2007 GoGreen Business Awards.

The April GAC Meeting is Cancelled

Vice Mayor and State Representative Toomey to Address May GAC
Cambridge Vice Mayor and State Representative Timothy Toomey, Jr. was scheduled to be our guest in January and had to cancel due to legislative responsibilities at the State House.  He will now be our guest on Tuesday, May 22 at noon at the Chamber Board Room.  Please e-mail tsmith@cambridgechamber.org or phone (617) 876-4213 if you plan to attend.

June GAC Events
Two events are being scheduled for June.

An update on the State’s health care reform law is being planned; date to be announced.

The Chamber will offer GAC members the opportunity to participate in Massachusetts Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (MACCE) State House Day scheduled for Wednesday June 13. More information with be forthcoming soon.

FY 2008 Budget

As previously reported the Council’s Finance Committee held a preliminary budget hearing on Wednesday April 4. The City Manager reported that the budget will be available to the Council at the April 23 Council meeting. He also reported that he and his staff are working to keep the levy increase below 6%.

GoGreen Business Award Nominations Solicited

The City annually awards small and large businesses for environmentally friendly workplace practices. Nominations are due to the City by April 27. More information on the GoGreen Business Awards and nomination forms are available at from the City website at GoGreen.

Northeastern University Nanotechnology Conference

The Chamber does not usually promote events outside of Cambridge but some of you may be interested in a conference Northeastern University is convening on May 1 titled “Nanotechnology and Public Policy: Basic Science, Applications, and Regulatory Implications.” Sam Lipson, Director of Environmental Health with the Cambridge Public Health Department is a panelist on a session titled Current Activities at State and Federal Regulatory Agencies.

The Chamber’s Director of Government Affairs is planning on attending and will report on the conference in a future Update. Information on the conference is available at nsrg.neu.edu.
