April 11 City Council Meeting
Manager Asks for Approval for Funding to Purchase Site for Police Headquarters The City Manager transmitted two communications related to financing the purchase of a shell building at 125 Sixth Street to be fitted out for the new Police Headquarters. Council members supported the Managers request and noted that the financing of this project was already included in the City’s capital plan. The Manager reported that once the sale is complete design and bidding would require twelve months with construction requiring eighteen to twenty-four months. If all goes well we should have a new Police Headquarters in three years.
The purchase of this property is the culmination of several years of discussion about the need for a new headquarters and a focused effort during this Council session to identify the requirements for a new police headquarters and begin identifying sites. The Manager and Council members noted that the City’s ability to move forward to purchase this property is a result of the work done over the past year.
Copies of the City Managers communications are available at: http://www.cambridgema.gov/cityclerk/cmLetter.cfm?item_id=4102 and http://www.cambridgema.gov/cityclerk/cmLetter.cfm?item_id=4098
Note that the City Manager’s communication and attached order were passed on to a second reading. The Council will need to vote again on the purchase of the property for the Manager to complete the acquisition.
