Leaders 2008 Great Success
More than 200 Cambridge leaders in business and government attended Leaders 2008 on Wednesday, January 23 at the Hotel Marlowe. This biannual event brings business and government leaders together at the start of each new City Council term.
Guests heard brief remarks from the event sponsors; David Green from Comcast, Tom Andrews from Alexandria Real Estate Equities, and Robert Wilson from Cambridge Savings Bank. Guests were also welcomed by new Cambridge Mayor E. Denise Simmons who spoke about her experience as a business owner and her excitement about working with the business community over the next two years.
City Manager Robert Healy delivered the big news of the night. The City Manager said he had “good and better news.” The good news is that the City learned last week that Moody’s has again given the City a triple A bond rating. The better news is the Standard and Poor’s has created a new category rating financial management and Cambridge is the first City in the country to receive a Strong rating. Healy noted that this success, coming in difficult financial times, is due to our strong local economy and thanked the work of the City Council and City staff for their part in this success. He also mentioned significant capital projects the City is undertaking that are possible due to the City’s strong financial position.
The event attracted elected officials from the State, including Senators Anthony Galluccio and Anthony Petruccelli and Representatives William Brownsberger, Rachel Kaprielian, Timothy Toomey, Marty Walz and Alice Wolf, and members of the City Council and School Committee including Mayor Simmons, Vice Mayor Brian Murphy, Councillors Henrietta Davis, Craig Kelley, David Maher, Ken Reeves, Sam Seidel and Tim Toomey and School Committee members Joe Grassi, Patty Nolan and Nancy Tauber. Middlesex County Register of Deeds John Buonomo and Middlesex County Clerk of Courts Michael Sullivan also joined us for the evening.
Thank you again to the Hotel Marlowe for hosting the event and to Comcast, Alexandria and Cambridge Savings Bank for sponsoring Leaders 2008. See you all in January 2010.
