    Tell us about your business:

The CitySprouts mission is to develop, implement and maintain beautiful, resource-rich school gardens in collaboration with public school communities. Integrated into the curriculum, CitySprouts gardens inspire teachers, students, and families with a deep, hands-on connection to the food cycle, sustainable agriculture, and the natural environment.

How long have you been a part of the Cambridge business community?

    16 years

What is the history of your business?

CitySprouts began in 2001 when a small group of parents, a teacher and a school principal formed a school garden program in two Cambridge schools. They were motivated by a shared concern about children growing up hungry for hands-on learning, ignorant of where their food comes from and with too few opportunities to really know their natural environment. Today CitySprouts has 24 school gardens, 8 of which are in Boston, and serves over 7,000 students.

How long have you been a member of the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce?

    1 month – 1 year

What is your favorite part of doing business in Cambridge?

Our favorite part of working in Cambridge is that we are district wide, reaching every elementary school child. Since 2001, CitySprouts has expanded to serve every elementary school in Cambridge Public Schools. Furthermore, we work with middle schoolers at the four upper schools in Cambridge through our Middle School Program.

What new or exciting things are happening with your business?

This year marks the 10th anniversary of our Summer Middle School Program. CitySprouts’ tuition-free summer program is held at the four Upper Schools in Cambridge. In this month long internship, youth tend and harvest their school garden to make a healthy lunch for themselves, explore the science of the garden and discover ways to make their community a better place to live. Each student who completes the internship receives $100 to mark what they’ve learned and the contributions they’ve made to their school and neighborhood.
